Counselors opportunities for Confident Kids Camp (CKC)
***As of May 2024, all counselor positions for CKC 2024 have been filled. Below is general information about volunteering at CKC. ***
Starting in January, Thriving Minds will recruit volunteer counselors for that year’s Confident Kids Camp, an intensive therapy "camp" for children and adolescents with Selective Mutism. Counselors are supervised at all times and complete approximately 40 hours of direct, supervised therapy with a pediatric population. The morning is spent in classroom activities and afternoons include field trips, scavenger hunts and “special guest appearances” that kids enjoy. This is a fun way to make a difference in the lives of children with selective mutism, help prepare them for the upcoming school year, and improve your clinical skills. Opportunities are available for graduate and undergraduate students.
Counselors will:
Attend a full-day training on a Saturday in June (date TBD)
Participate in a 2-hour preliminary “lead-in” session with their assigned camper during the summer (dates TBD)
Attend the entire camp in Brighton, Michigan. This is typically the last week of July.
Interested clinicians and graduate students should send a cover letter and CV to Katelyn Reed at kreed@thrivingminds.info.
Thriving Minds offers a comprehensive, year-long practicum program designed for advanced doctoral and master’s level graduate students (second year and above) with a passion for child psychology. Our program is deeply committed to providing high-quality training and supervision, with four licensed psychologists dedicated to your professional development. Students receive weekly individual supervision, guided by a developmental model, and have regular opportunities for informal consultations to ensure ongoing support and growth.
The practicum focuses on delivering evidence-based interventions and conducting gold-standard evaluations for children, adolescents, and their families. Our clinicians specialize in treating anxiety, Selective Mutism, OCD, ADHD, and behavioral issues. Practicum students will engage in pediatric psychotherapy, psycho-educational and developmental assessments, and participate in the dissemination of information to the public.
As a busy child psychology practice with locations in Brighton, Chelsea, and Livonia, we provide hands-on opportunities to work with diverse cases. Students are expected to commit to two days per week (approximately 12-15 hours), including 4-7 hours of direct patient care.
In addition to clinical work, students will participate in monthly peer supervision, group consultations in specialties like Selective Mutism and ADHD, didactics, and opportunities to shadow experienced clinicians. Training includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for children, Behavioral Therapy for Selective Mutism, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, among others. There are also opportunities to assist with curriculum development for our Selective Mutism camp and participate in business development training.
While this is an unpaid position, the experience offers a robust learning environment, strong mentorship, and exposure to advanced clinical work. If you're looking to deepen your expertise in pediatric psychology, we encourage you to apply and become part of our training team.
Typical practicum placements run from September - August with recruitment taking place in January and February. To apply, send a cover letter and CV in the same document to bhella@thrivingminds.info.
Application due date for 2025-2026 training year: January 24, 2025.
